10噸膠樽回收大行動
10 Tonne Challenge

拾樽背後 • 關懷扶貧

V Cycle is a social enterprise that is committed to attaining an effective circular economy that will benefit Hong Kong socially and environmentally. We are organising this activity in the hope of collecting over 10 tonnes of PET (polyethene terephthalate) plastic bottles, which are categorised as type 1 plastics and usually take the form of beverage bottles.

We aim to recycle the collected bottles and remake them into creative, multi-purpose tote bags.  Part of the recycling process will involve waste pickers, enabling them to earn extra income, while the sewing and stitching process will create job opportunities for rehabilitation participants. Proceeds from the sales of the bags will be used towards improving the lives of waste pickers.

The Ten Tonne Challenge will include environmental education and visits to assist waste pickers.  Our aim is to promote ecological conservation and help some of Hong Kong’s least fortunate citizens.

Campaign Mechanism

The bottle collection process will enable waste pickers to earn extra money. Bottles collected will be recycled and remade into reusable bags, creating jobs for people from a rehabilitation programme as they take on sewing and stitching responsibilities.

popo-01.jpg

Step One

A simpler, less labour intensive and systematic method for waste pickers to collect batches of PET bottles from V Cycle PET collection bins and reverse vending machines.

Step Two

Waste pickers will be paid for the bottles they collect from the collection points. Each waste picker is responsible for 5 to 7 collection points that are in close proximity to each other. PET bottles are then processed into rPET flakes by local recycler Lau Choi Kee.

Step Three

Flakes are repurposed into eco-friendly tote bags and made by people with special needs thus creating jobs for them.

Step Four

Proceeds from the sale of the bags go back to form a special V Cycle “LOVE & CARE” group to provide support and care for the waste pickers after the end of the campaign.

Aim of Campaign

2018-08-26 05.45.39 2.jpg

Collection

Facilitating effective recycling methods to reduce pressure on landfill sites and our oceans

V Cycle PET collection bins and reverse vending machines make collection more convenient for waste pickers.

Raise Awareness

Reducing plastic bottle induced pollution in natural habitats and raising public environmental awareness

Our cause seeks to recycle more than 10 tonnes of PET bottles and organise environmental education campaigning activities, including school talks and beach cleaning events. We aim to provide youth with real-life experiences and show how small gestures can make a big difference to our ecosystem and the lives of the less fortunate.

2018-06-18-05.39.04-1-resized.jpg

Job Creation

To create job opportunities for the rehabilitating and rehabilitated

All disposable plastic bottles will be collected, recycled and made into fashionable, reusable shopping bags. The project brings together local designers and rehabilitation workers and will create job opportunities for the needy.

2018-06-18-05.39.04-1-resized.jpg

Bring people closer

Organising social activities, raising awareness, bringing “LOVE & CARE” to the community

V Cycle will hold multiple workshops and talks for members of the local community. We aim to share knowledge and facilitate deeper understanding for people of all walks of life to care more about their surroundings and the people around us. A simple smile can show respect and let others feel warmth, appreciation and encouragement.

2018-06-18-05.39.04-1.jpg

waste pickers’ support

To improve the livelihood of waste pickers and allowing the public to learn about how they are contributing to society

V Cycle will set up a ‘LOVE & CARE’ group where members will establish an in- depth understanding of the working conditions of waste pickers, and then introduce them to help in collecting used plastic bottles. Not only will this provide a new source of income for them, but it will also alleviate hardship in their work.

At the same time, the campaign will shed light on local waste pickers’ contributionto the recycling industry, which is so greatly deserving of the respect and appreciation of fellow Hong Kongers.

CSR Fulfilment

Fulfilling corporate social responsibilities and establishing a down-to-earth and positive social image

This campaign will not realise its full potential without the help of participating organisations and individuals. Taking part in this meaningful endeavour will enhance corporate image and raise positive energy, while practically benefitting the environment and the underprivileged in Hong Kong.
