Waste Pickers Visit in Kwun Tong

As part of our campaign to visit Hong Kong’s waste pickers, V Cycle has met numerous people whose days are long and tiring, but they still have a bright outlook on life.

We met with an amazing elderly waste picker in Kwun Tong. She is 90 years old, but unfortunately works as one of Hong Kong’s waste pickers from 6 o’clock in the morning to 9 o’clock at night, 7 days a week with no day off for a rest and she meagrely earns less than HKD $50 per day.

She recently injured her arm after a fall, but she refused to see the doctor because she thinks she's too old and should just let it be. We asked her, "what can we do to make your life better? How can we make you happy?" She replied, "I'm happy and I have enough money to live a simple life. No more, no less. All I want is to pass away without any pain and go to a better place."

This is just one out of many cases where the waste pickers of Hong Kong show their positivity and perseverance. We hope that cases like these will inspire and enlighten Hong Kongers to treat waste pickers with more compassion and to also keep a positive outlook on their own lives too.
